VoIP, or voice over internet protocol, has already changed the way that many Americans communicate with friends and loved ones. With VoIP it became possible to make seemingly regular phone calls - even long distance phone calls that would have cost a fortune with regular phone services, for free.

In today's world, with the current state of the economy, everyone is looking for ways to cut their costs of living and to save money in any way possible. So what we could see in the future of VoIP could conceivably be a device that would very effectively allow end users to do away with their home phone service as well as their cell phone service and allow them to do all of the connecting that they need to (local and long distance, day and night) without spending a penny more than they would already be spending for a wireless internet connection.

The other day I had to phone a friend in Singapore so I phoned his VoIP number. The call did not connect because ny friend had his PC off and his voip phone adaptor was also off.

I tried his mobile and finally got through to him.

I asked my friend why his phone adaptor was off and he said "old habits die hard". He said that in Singapore the habit is to use the Mobile phone even though it is more expensive.

When I reminded my friend that this call is costing me heaps (I was calling International) he sighed and said he had forgotten that I would be paying for the call.

It is just a mindset really but a mindset that should check with reality from time to time. Look at the proliferation of Texting messages and the use of mobile phones as a "normal phone" for conversations, long and short. We think nothing of it to pick up the phone and use it to call others, until the bill comes. Look at what we pay each month on bills for the Mobile phone, the Internet, the home phone line, the calls we make and the total cost would surprise most of us. Can we afford to carry this on in an economic downturn that is seeing many of us out of work and with little spare cash?

Its a no brainer when you think about it.

The Communication Revolution is well under way but we must continue the fight for sometime yet to make sure that voip is so common that all calls basically will be either free or very low cost (and without the hidden charges so prevalent with Mobiles and Landlines).
