Unlimited flat rate calling packages can range from $19.95/month to as high as $54.95/month (per line). Usually the lower priced providers have more customers and are able to offer the service at a lower price due to a lower overhead per subscriber.
VoIP Product Features: Not all VoIP providers are created equal. VoIP offers a great value to the consumers because of the drastically reduced long distance costs as well as inexpensive local phone service with lots of enhanced features. In simple terms, VoIP means that instead of using your telephone to make a call, a VoIP service provider will install some equipment in your computer that will allow you to call using your existing Internet connection.
Benefits of VoIP
There are several reasons why people are turning to this technology, and foremost is that it is much cheaper compared with traditional phones, both landline and cellular. The rates, for both local and international calls, are also significantly reduced.
The other advantage is that it allows you to use your phone number regardless of where you are in the world. As an example; an executive in New York who is on a business trip in Vienna only has to bring his VoIP adapter with him and plug it in a PC in the hotel room; now he can call using his own phone. This not just lowers the cost, but also saves him from incurring any additional bills from the hotel.

To use VoIP with a computer you can use a free downloadable client, and either a headset with built in microphone, or computer speakers and microphone. Most people have heard of Skype, a very popular VoIP client that makes it possible to make free calls from your computer to other computers or Skype users. MSN or Windows Live Messenger, and Yahoo Messenger do the same thing! When you're using Yahoo and MSN to voice chat you are using VoIP. You can also use these services to make calls to cell phones, or landline phones, but normally for a fee. In general only computer calls are free.
While making calls using a VoIP client is either cheap or free, it does have its limitations, with the biggest one being not everyone has Skype, MSN, or Yahoo messenger. Your contacts have to be online for you to call them, or for them to call you. With virtual phone numbers you can get a phone number outside of your area code. One of the most common uses for this is getting a virtual number in an area code where a friend or family member lives. This way if they call you it is like a local phone call to them, and you're not charged anything over your monthly fee for the virtual number, or your normal calling plan fees. I.e. If you have an unlimited calling plan you don't get charged for the call if it's within your calling region.

If you're using a VoIP client, applications that take up a lot of system resources such as online games, or other media can also decrease your call quality. Factors such as wireless connections, or other people using the same Internet connection can also play a role.
Quality is more often effected when using a client vs a phone since with a client you're actually using your computer and its resources. Generally broadband phone service phone calls are just as good if not better than traditional landline calls, but if you do experience an issue with quality, it may be one of the aforementioned scenarios, and is often easily corrected.

VoIP clients are available anywhere you have a computer, and broadband Internet connection. Broadband telephone service is available anywhere you have a broadband connection, but that doesn't mean a phone number for your area is available from all providers. The competition spread from Canada and now Skype, a major international player with more than 100 million registered users, offers software that can be downloaded for free. It works over any broadband internet connection and allows unlimited free calling to regular phones within North America and other Skype users anywhere in the world. It also offered low-cost calls to regular phones outside North America.
There are a few free internet phone services. BroadPoint was the pioneer of the type that allows you to call from a regular phone to another phone, in exchange for viewing advertisements, visiting websites, or signing up with partner services. BroadPoint unfortunately went out of business. PhoneHog now offers this class of service with several improvements.
The next class of free calling services lets you call any phone from your computer. Your free calling is unlimited and you don't have to spend time listening to ads. Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, has only been around for a relatively short period of time when you look at the big picture of human history. In the roughly six thousand or so years of recorded history, VoIP has only been around for a very short time, a small blip or dot in the timeline of man. That said, in the time it's been around, it has grown by leaps and bounds.
The beginnings of VoIP can be found with the introduction of the telegraph and the first telephones - that desire to be able to communicate over vast distances easily, cheaply, and in real time. When Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in 1876, he started a ball rolling, a ball of information that would build up over the years.
For many years after the invention of the telephone, use skyrocketed and phones became commonplace and found in everyone's homes. During these initial decades, though, the technology progressed slowly. Slow evolution is still evolution, though.

That said, in the time it's been around, it has grown by leaps and bounds.
The beginnings of VoIP can be found with the introduction of the telegraph and the first telephones - that desire to be able to communicate over vast distances easily, cheaply, and in real time. When Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in 1876, he started a ball rolling, a ball of information that would build up over the years.
For many years after the invention of the telephone, use skyrocketed and phones became commonplace and found in everyone's homes. During these initial decades, though, the technology progressed slowly. Slow evolution is still evolution, though.

Sound quality isn't always the best. Even with enough bandwidth and high quality equipment, however, sound quality is usually not as good as you'd get with a phone.
Incompatibility. Some VoIP programs will only communicate with other users who have the same program.
Power outages can knock out your service. If your power goes, your phone service goes.
